What Is Women’s Health Physio (Available In Barnstaple)?

Are you looking for Women’s Health physiotherapy in Barnstaple? You are in the right place!

We assess and treat a wide variety of problems ranging from urinary incontinence, prolapses, pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy and post-natal care.

1 in 3 women will experience urinary incontinence in their lifetime! Yet it is something that can still feel a little embarrassing to talk about. This is where I want to put your mind at ease and invite you in for an appointment. The NICE guidelines advise that supervised pelvic floor muscle training for at least 3 months should be the first line of treatment for stress or mixed urinary incontinence (NICE, 2019).

Vaginal/Internal examinations

I fully appreciate how daunting this process can be, but I want to reassure you that we will provide dignity and care throughout your time with us. A vaginal examination is the best way to assess and help you with your pelvic floor issues. We can tailor make a plan that suits you.

We offer a chaperone service which safeguards both the Physiotherapist and the patient. At any point you can withdraw from the examination.

What is a Mummy MOT?

A mummy MOT is a comprehensive, specialist, post-natal check-up. We usually recommend you see your GP at 6 weeks and then we welcome bookings at 6 weeks post vaginal birth and 8 weeks post C section.

This is where we come in!

What does a Mummy MOT practitioner do?

We invite you in for a 1 hour appointment and look at the following areas of the body:

  • Full postural screen
  • Pelvic floor muscle assessment
  • Abdominal examination to check for separation
  •  Screening for bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction

It also gives women a great opportunity to talk about their own journey of pregnancy and birth and the 4th trimester, which is often not talked about enough.

A full report and tailored exercise programme are then created for each individual.

The best feature of a mummy MOT is that goals can be set and worked on together. Whether this is as simple as how best to bend and pick up your baby with less pain or an effective and safe route to get back into running.
